Les participes français remontent aux participes correspondents du latin, sauf la forme composée et forme passive du participe présent. Le participe passé provient du participium perfecti passivi, le participe présent-du participium praesentis activi. Les deux formes latines s’accordaient avec le nom, la première en genre et en nombre: dictus-dicti, dicta-dictae, etc., la seconde en nombre: cantans-cantantes. Les deux formes se déclinaient. De nos jours, le participe présent est invariable. Le gérondif remonte au gerundium latin, mais en français il représente une catégorie grammaticale toute nouvelle.
